A Day in the Life with April

Every day can feel almost the same when there’s a long to-do list with seemingly no end. Even just existing requires thinking about meals, connecting with loved ones, and more. The day can slip away from you quickly, but what if it didn’t have to? Imagine a day in the life where you have control over your schedule, calendar, and email fully.

7:30AM

As you turn your alarm off, you stay in bed for a few more minutes. Instead of dreading checking your phone to be flooded with messages about work, you take your time checking a dashboard and see where to direct your priorities and early morning efforts. You have a slow, easy start to the day.

10:00AM

The morning is used for your deep work. Deep work is a state coined by Cal Newport which refers to professional activity performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. You’re not spending your morning filtering through your emails and crafting your to-do list based on the sudden flood of calendar invites. You’re spending your morning doing meaningful work rather than managing small tasks.

1:00PM

You now have time to have a nourishing meal. Whether you order out, cook for yourself, or heat leftovers, feeding your stomach is the way to feed your brain. As you enjoy your meal, put your phone away and take in the present moment. This should be a time of reflection, intention, and presence during the day. According to psychologicalscience.org, incorporating mindfulness in your routine can prove to be highly beneficial: “One 15-minute focused-breathing meditation may help people make smarter choices, according to new research from researchers at INSEAD and The Wharton School. The findings are published in the February issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science…the results show that mindfulness meditation increased resistance to the sunk-cost bias in each of the three experiments.”

3:00PM

After taking the time to have a proper break, you’re able to come back to your workspace knowing exactly what to do next. There are no emails to catch up on, and you can make it past the mid-day slump people are often faced with. It’s time for another deep work session of the day.

6:00PM

As the day ends, you close your laptop with a clear head. Your to-do list is perfectly checked off, and you can relax and enjoy your evening knowing that you were productive. Take the evening to do an activity you enjoy. If it’s spending time with family, watching a movie, or going outside for a walk, find something for the end of each day to look forward to.
